VIDEO: Bloomberg, Persefoni discuss Intelligent Carbon Footprint Management
Bloomberg recently spoke with Persefoni Co-founder & CEO Kentaro Kawamori about the data challenge surrounding carbon footprint management, the different tools that are already on the market today, and how best to ensure organizations making net-zero claims live up to those challenges.
“Disclosing a carbon footprint today and calculating it in the first place is a highly opaque practice at best, and unfortunately at times, is damn near a lie," said Kawamori. "One of the biggest problems hampering transparency in this sector (are) different standards across calculation mechanisms and reporting mechanisms. It’s one of the reasons it’s so critical for policymakers around the world and regulators around the world to set standards."
Kawamori was asked if there was an “aha” moment for him while serving as the chief digital officer of the Fortune 500 company Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:CHK) that led him to eventually build the Persefoni platform.
“We did. We saw a huge data problem, first and foremost. This was about three years ago … right around the time that institutional asset managers were starting to call companies like Chesapeake and asking them to start disclosing their (carbon) footprints. What we discovered very quickly was the technology to do that didn’t really exist.”
